Thomas Francis Murphy was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1953. Early in his adult life, he supported himself by working on factory floors and in dairy barns.
He has worked as a freelance theatre critic, an EMT, a hard hat diver, and a social worker. He spent a very long time painting houses. When Murphy was in his forties and living in Little Rock, Arkansas, he decided to sign up for an acting class. The class changed the course of his life.
