He was an undrafted free agent who signed with the Detroit Lions in 2017 after playing college football for Indiana State University.
After redshirting his first year, Tonyan enrolled at Indiana State in 2012 and played for four years. In 2013, he participated in 11 games, starting three of them at quarterback.
He completed 35 of 102 throws for 348 yards and three touchdowns; the first completion of his career was a 57-yard touchdown. He switched to wide receiver in his second season, catching 54 passes for 747 yards (6th in school history) and four touchdowns, including a career-high 172 yards in the final game of the season (seventh in school history).
In his junior year of 2015, Tonyan had 40 receptions for 601 yards and six touchdowns, which ranked twelfth in school history.
