Damon was a good student at Cambridge Alternative School and Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. He participated as an actor in various high school plays.

He was a 1992 graduate of Harvard University and a resident of Lowell House, but he left before completing his degree to play the lead in the movie Geronimo: An American Legend. As a writing assignment for an English class at Harvard, Damon created an early draught of the script for the movie Good Will Hunting, for which he eventually won an Oscar.
