Allen studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and played wide receiver as a starter for the football team of the California Golden Bears from 2010 to 2012.

He attended California to play college football before quitting after his junior year. In the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Chargers.

After breaking the Chargers rookie records for receptions and receiving yards, Allen was awarded numerous rookie awards. He received the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in 2017.

He had 46 receptions for 490 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman in 2010. Allen recorded a career-high 98 catches for 1,343 yards as a sophomore in 2011. He recorded 61 receptions for 737 yards and six touchdowns as a junior in 2012.

After his junior year, he left Cal having hauled in 205 passes, a school record, for 2,570 yards (third in school history), and 25 touchdowns (seventh)
