In Louisiana’s Destrehan, Jefferson attended Destrehan High School. After high school, he was ranked as the 308th-best wide receiver in the country and had a low 3-star prospect rating. He chose Louisiana State University (LSU) to play college football.

The Vikings selected him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft after he played college football for LSU. He was then selected to the Pro Bowl after setting an NFL rookie record of 1,400 receiving yards (which was surpassed in 2021 by Ja’Marr Chase, a teammate from his time at LSU). In each of his first two seasons, Jefferson played in the pro bowl and made the second-team All-Pro.
