Kmet went to Arlington Heights, Illinois’s St. Viator High School. In high school, he participated in football and baseball.

He collected 48 receptions for 773 yards and four touchdowns as a senior in football. In 2017, Kmet participated in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He agreed to play college football at Notre Dame University.

Kmet participated in all 13 of Notre Dame’s games as a true freshman in 2017 and had two receptions for 14 yards. He participated in 11 games in 2018 as a sophomore and hauled in 15 passes for 162 yards.

In his junior year of 2019, Kmet replaced the starting tight end. A broken collarbone caused him to miss the first three games of the season. He declared in November that he would stay at Notre Dame for his senior year rather than sign with an NFL team in the 2020 NFL Draft.
