Actress Carol Christine Hilaria Pounder was born in Georgetown, British Guiana, on December 25, 1952. She is Guyanese-American.
She received four Primetime Emmy nominations for her work on The X-Files, ER, The Shield, and The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

Pounder attended Ithaca College, where he received his degree in 1975. She studied painting at Hastings College of Arts and Technology before enrolling at Ithaca College. She was forced to leave school since her family moved to the US.
Pounder made his acting debut in the 1979 film All That Jazz. She continued performing in New York City theatre, including Broadway appearances in Richard Wesley’s The Mighty Gents and Open Admissions.
She moved to Los Angeles in 1982, made her film debut as the lead in Bagdad Café, and has subsequently starred in a number of additional, smaller appearances.
