Carmen was an Australian publisher, writer, and critic who died on October 17, 2022. In 1973, she started Virago Press. In 2017, she was awarded the Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature.

On July 15, 1938, Callil was born in Melbourne, Australia; however, he moved to London in 1960.

Callil was the third of four children that her widowed mother, Lorraine Clare Allen, reared. Her father, Frederick Alfred Louis Callil, taught French at the University of Melbourne and practiced law.

After attending Star of the Sea Convent and Loreto Mandeville Hall for her education, Callil earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Literature from the University of Melbourne in 1960.
