In Boston, Massachusetts, on April 29, 1970, Uma Karuna Thurman was born. Her father, Robert Thurman, is an author and professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies who spent three years living the life of an ordained Buddhist monk.
Her mother, the high-fashion model Nena von Schlebrügge, was produced in Mexico City by a German aristocrat and a Swedish model.
Thurman was raised Buddhist and spent around two years in the town of Almora in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand.
She spent much of her childhood in Amherst, Massachusetts, attending Amherst Regional Junior High School before relocating to Woodstock, New York.
