He originally rose to fame as the lead in the 1979 musical movie Hair, and he then appeared in Prince of the City, Once Upon a Time in America, The Late Shift, and 127 Hours. He served as the show’s protagonist from 2002 to 2006 and received two Screen Actors Guild nominations for his performance.

Williams made his movie debut in the thriller Deadly Hero from 1975. He appeared in The Ritz as a minor character the next year as a squeaky-voiced private investigator searching for his suspect at a homosexual bathhouse.
