Abel Makkonen Tesfaye who is better known as Weeknd, was born in Toronto, Ontario on February 16, 1990. Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu, Ethiopian immigrants, divorced shortly after he was born.
Weeknd was raised in Scarborough by his mother and grandmother. The Weeknd was raised as an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian. When asked about his religious beliefs in 2020, he told Variety, “I dunno…everything is a test, and if you are religious or spiritual, you have to go through things.”
