She grew up in Italy and, against the advice of her parents, moved to Paris at age 16 to study play.

Her father, the actor Philippe Leroy-Beaulieu, particularly attempted to discourage her from pursuing a career in acting, but in vain.

She made her feature debut in Roger Vadim’s 1983 movie Surprise Party after performing on stage. She played the anguished mother in Trois hommes et un couffin, her first significant cinema performance, in 1985, earning a nomination for the César Award for Most Promising Actress (Three Men and a Cradle).
