In his first season with the Nittany Lions in 2018, Freiermuth made nine starts and broke the mark for the most receiving touchdowns by a rookie tight end with his 26 grabs for 368 yards and eight scores.
During the 2021 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Freiermuth in the second round (55th overall). On May 25, 2021, he committed to Pittsburgh for the first four years of his rookie deal.
