American actress Melissa Leo, full name Melissa Chessington Leo, was born in New York City on September 14, 1960. She is well-recognized for her realistic portrayals of tough, steely women dealing with challenging circumstances.

Leo was born in Manhattan and reared in the Lower East Side. She is the child of California teacher Margaret Leo and Arnold Leo III, a longtime editor at Grove Press and spokesman for the East Hampton Baymen’s Association.

In the independent films American Gun and Hide & Seek, both of which were released in 2005, as well as a brief role in the comedy Mr Woodcock, Leo had supporting cameos during the 2000s.
Leo made her acting debut in 1984, and for All My Children, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Newcomer/Woman in a Drama Series at the 12th Daytime Emmy Awards.
After that, Leo made additional movie appearances, including those in Streetwalkin’, A Time of Destiny, Last Summer in the Hamptons, and Venice/Venice.
She also had several appearances on television, most notably from 1993 to 1997 in the role of Detective Sgt. Kay Howard on the drama series Homicide: Life on the Street.
