From 1995 until 2010, Republican politician Mark Edward Souder represented Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives. Souder, the son of Irma (née Fahling) and Edward G. Souder, was born in Grabill, Indiana. He went to the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, and Leo Junior/Senior High School.
Souder worked as Gabbort’s Furniture’s marketing manager from 1974 until 1976. He had been the proprietor of Historic Souder’s of Grabill, also known as Souder’s General Store, since 1976. From 1983 to 1984, Souder worked as a staff member for US Representative Dan Coats. From 1985 to 1988, he was the minority staff director for the House Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families.

In January 2022, Souder received a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. On September 26, 2022, he passed away from the illness at the age of 72.
Several weeks ago, Souder enrolled in hospice care. He stated earlier this year that chemotherapy, along with surgery, were no longer alternatives for treatment for his pancreatic cancer and that his doctors had ceased giving it to him.
