On March 18, 1938, Machiko was born in Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan. Despite having acting skills, she was nurtured as a singer because of her modest origins.
When she was a little child, her mother passed away, leaving her father to raise her. Of her three siblings, she was the youngest. While one of her brothers is still living, the other perished in World War II. In 1991, her father went away from cancer.

That evening, she had the opportunity to interact with many influential people in the Japanese television industry, changing her life forever. She made her television debut in 1956 on the kids’ program Minna issho on NHK.
After years of attending jazz dance instruction, she largely played radio and voice character roles in her early engagements. She gained notoriety after performing as the first voice actress to play the endearing ghost Q-taro in Obake no Q-tar (1961’s NHK radio drama Chorinmura to Kurumi no Ki).
