Bass co-founded “Rankin/Bass Animated Productions” with Arthur Rankin Jr., which later produced the Christmas specials that are still shown on television. Bass worked on programs with stop-motion animation.
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” made its television premiere on NBC in 1964, and it has since aired nonstop. The story of kids who build the eponymous character and then give him life by donning a magician’s hat was well welcomed when “Frosty the Snowman” made its television premiere on CBS in 1969.
The well-known 1970 ABC program “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” which included Fred Astaire as the narrator, was then presented by Bass and Rankin. Several additional Bass-Rankin initiatives include “Pinocchio’s Christmas,” “The Little Drummer Boy,” and “The Year Without A Santa Claus.”
Bass’ “The Little Drummer Boy II” was nominated for an Emmy for “Outstanding Children’s Special” in 1977.
