Gatt was born on December 3, 1971, in the London neighborhood of Notting Hill, the son of Maltese immigrants; his father is from Paola and his mother is from Lija.
He spent his childhood summers in Malta with his family. As a youth, he found he was colorblind, which stopped him from entering the Royal Air Force and becoming a fighter pilot.
He believes that the stress of this revelation was a likely catalyst for his alopecia Universalis, which he was diagnosed with at the age of 12 and had lost all of his hair by the age of 14. He studied acting at the Sylvia Young Theatre School before enrolling in the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, where he earned a bachelor’s degree.
