Kavanagh made his acting debut in the 1970 Irish comedy Paddy, where he played the small role of Willie Egan. The McKenzie Break, a 1970 World War II film about Scottish POWs organizing their escape from a camp, also had a brief appearance by him. In the 1970s, the Irish stage version of Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris starred singer-turned-actor Kavanagh as Jacques Brel.
He also played a significant part in the subsequent television production, which was shown in December 1978.
