Thomas Jacob Black was born on August 28, 1969, in Santa Monica, California, to satellite engineers Thomas William Black and Judith Love Cohen.
His mother worked on the Minuteman nuclear missile guidance system, the Apollo lunar module guidance system, and the Hubble Space Telescope science ground station, and she was also a writer.
