Gordon Sparks dies: Cause of death revealed
The BBC Radio Devon presenter Sparks died at 61 following a battle with cancer.
The radio host was being treated at St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth until his death, with stars and heartbroken colleagues sharing tributes after his passing.
Announcing the news, Stephanie Marshall, head of BBC South and South West, said: ‘It is a very sad day for BBC Radio Devon. Our hearts go out to Gordon’s friends, family and faithful listeners.
‘Gordon was a broadcasting legend who is honest and brave through the toughest times. He will be missed dearly.’
Gordon was best known for presenting the BBC Radio Devon Breakfast Show and had commentated on Plymouth Argyle games for 32 years.
He is survived by his wife Heather, daughters Kirsty and Holly and his granddaughter.
Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies paid tribute to the presenter, tweeting: ‘Sad to hear we’ve lost @SparksyOnRadio Gordon Sparks the sporting voice of Plymouth, fellow Janner & friend.
‘He’ll be very missed especially by all those at@HeraldPAFC RIP Sparkzy x.’
Footballer Peter Shilton also said, ‘I am so sad to hear that Gordon Sparks has passed away. Steph and I saw him not so long ago at a dinner in Plymouth.
‘He was always so supportive when l was at the club and always such a lovely man. RIP Gordon.’
