George Santos, a Republican, was elected in 2022 to represent New York’s 3rd congressional district, which includes parts of northern Long Island and northeast Queens, after unsuccessfully running for the seat two years earlier.
George Santos claimed that his maternal grandparents were Ukrainian Jews who fled to Belgium and then to Brazil to escape the Holocaust during World War II, but genealogical records and other evidence show that Santos’ ancestors have lived in Brazil for at least three generations and have no connection to Ukraine, Jewish heritage, or Holocaust survivors.

Currently, George Santos is not married. He has openly revealed that he is gay, however, he was previously married. He married in 2012 and got divorced in 2019. Santos ran for the 3rd congressional district again in 2022, though the district boundaries had changed following the 2020 redistricting cycle. He faced Democrat Robert Zimmerman in the race.
Both George Santos and Zimmerman are openly gay, making this the first time two openly LGBTQ candidates have faced off in a general election for a seat in Congress.
