Emma Thompson’s parents: Meet Eric Thompson and Phyllida Law
Thompson was born in London on 15 April 1959. Her mother is the Scottish actress Phyllida Law, while her English father, Eric Thompson, was involved in theatre, and was the writer–narrator of the popular children’s television series The Magic Roundabout.
In 1967, her father had a heart attack, resulting from overwork and heavy smoking, and therefore changed his focus to directing. He directed Kenneth Williams in My Fat Friend in 1972 and the conflicts between the two are extensively discussed in the Williams’ diaries.
Eric died of a heart attack in London on 30 November 1982.
