Edgar Bergen was born Edgar John Bergen was an American ventriloquist, actor, comedian, vaudevillian, and radio performer, best known for his proficiency in ventriloquism and his characters Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. He was the father of actress Candice Bergen.

Bergen has passed away on September 30, 1978, in Paradise, Nevada, U.S. at the age of 75 years. He died of kidney disease. He was on February 16, 1903, in Chicago, Illinois, U.S., and one of five children and the younger of two sons of Swedish immigrants Nilla Svensdotter Osberg and Johan Henriksson Berggren. He lived on a farm near Decatur, Michigan until he was four when his family returned to Sweden, where he learned the language.

On June 28, 1945, Edgar Bergen got married to his wife Frances Bergen in Mexico, after a long-distance courtship. They remained happily married until Edgar’s death.

Bergen has two children a daughter and a son. On May 9, 1946, Bergen and his wife Frances welcomed their first child, Candice Bergen. Fifteen years later, on October 12, 1961, they had a son, Kris Edgar Bergen, who become a film and television editor.
