In the late 1980s, he returned to Scotland and began training in Muay Thai kickboxing.
He won the Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Championship of the World Kickboxing Association in 1993, which was his first championship.
He abandoned that title after successfully defending it and went up to the cruiserweight and eventually the heavyweight divisions, where he won a series of further titles. He made his K-1 debut in February 1999 at K-1 Rising Sun ’99 against Japanese great Musashi and lost through technical knockout after being taken down three times in the third round.
