Burgess was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. While a student at Newcastle-under-Lyme School, he took part in school productions of Twelfth Night and Death of a Salesman.
He received a Dance and Drama Awards Scholarship and was accepted into the three-year Acting program at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA). He appeared on camera for his first professional role in the Batman Begins film on the day of his final ALRA graduation.
