David Dastmalchian was born on July 21, 1975, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to Priscilla (1941-2020) and Hossein Dastmalchian (1937-2021), an Iranian-American engineer who worked at the engineering company Black & Veatch before becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate.
He described his parents’ “tumultuous” divorces and subsequent remarriages. He attended Shawnee Mission South High School and joined the theatre club.
He was raised in Overland Park, Kansas. He said that although the Kansas City metro region was “very conventional in one sense, and a conservative place, it also had a rad, fringe, creative, progressive tribe of individuals who were discovering connectedness via the arts and culture of KC and the nearby suburbs.”
In addition, he has appeared in Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Prisoners, all directed by Denis Villeneuve. The semi-autobiographical movie Animals was written and starred Dastmalchian.
