He was nominated to the first team of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference as a freshman after catching 15 catches for 409 yards and six touchdowns.

In the summer before his sophomore year, Gray chose TCU over offers from Auburn, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Tennessee in order to transfer for his last two seasons of eligibility.
