Sutton took a medical redshirt as a true freshman at SMU in 2014 after appearing in just two games due to injury.
He started all 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2015 and finished with 49 receptions for 862 yards and nine touchdowns. He participated in three games for the SMU basketball team after the season. In his second season, Sutton started all 12 games, hauled in 76 passes for 1,246 yards and 10 scores.
Sutton was debating taking part in the 2017 NFL Draft, but he ultimately chose to go back to school for his redshirt junior year. Sutton formally announced on December 22, 2017, that he would join the 2018 NFL Draft after finishing his junior year.
