Benford was one of the two starting cornerbacks for the Bills in their 31-10 thrashing of the LA Rams, the defending Super Bowl LVI champions, in week one.

As a true freshman, Benford participated in nine games with eight starts, and after recording 49 tackles, six pass breakups, and five interceptions, he was awarded the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Defensive Rookie of the Year and third-team All-CAA.
As a sophomore, he participated in ten games, made seven starts, intercepted one pass, and broke up five others. In his junior year, which was cut short and played in the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 epidemic in the United States, Benford was named to the first team All-CAA.
