She was an Australian publisher, writer, and critic who died on October 17, 2022. In 1973, she started Virago Press. In 2017, she was awarded the Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature.

Callil, who was born on July 15, 1938, in Melbourne, Australia, moved to London in 1960. Callil was the third of four children that Lorraine Clare Allen, her widowed mother, reared. At the University of Melbourne, her father, Frederick Alfred Louis Callil, taught French and practiced law.

Callil received her education at Star of the Sea Convent and Loreto Mandeville Hall before earning a Bachelor of Arts in History and Literature from the University of Melbourne in 1960.
