She won five Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for her portrayal of the title character on the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown. She is also known for her role as Shirley Schmidt on the ABC drama Boston Legal.
Bergen is probably best known for starring in “Murphy Brown.” The show aired 247 episodes between 1988 and 1998 and was revived for 13 episodes in 2018. Candace won five Emmy awards for her work on the show. According to legend, she asked to stop being nominated to give other actresses a chance.

Bergen was born to her parents who are also stars in America. Her mother, identified as Frances Bergen Westerman, was a Powers model known professionally as Frances Westcott, and her father named Edgar Bergen, was a ventriloquist, comedian, and actor.
Frances Bergen was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the daughter of Lille Mabel and William Westerman. Her paternal grandparents were both from German families. In 1933, her father died of tuberculosis, when Frances was ten years old. Shortly after, her mother moved the family to Los Angeles. She graduated from Los Angeles High School.
On October 2, 2006, Frances died at age 84, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of undisclosed causes following “a prolonged illness”. She was not buried beside her husband Edgar Bergen, but rather cremated with her ashes interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles.
Edgar John Bergen was born in Chicago, Illinois, one of five children and the younger of two sons of Swedish immigrants Nilla Svensdotter and Johan Henriksson Berggren. He lived on a farm near Decatur, Michigan until he was four when his family returned to Sweden, where he learned the language. After his family had returned to Chicago, when he was eleven, he taught himself ventriloquism from a pamphlet called “The Wizard’s Manual”. He attended Lake View High School. After his father died, when Edgar was 16, he went out to work as an apprentice accountant, a furnace stoker, a player-piano operator, and a projectionist in a silent-movie house.
On June 28, 1945, Edgar Bergen and Frances Bergen got married in Mexico, after years of long-distance courtship. They remained happily married until Edgar’s death on September 30, 1978, at age 75.
On May 9, 1946, the couple welcomed their first child, Candice Bergen. Fifteen years later, on October 12, 1961, they had a son, Kris Edgar Bergen, who become a film and television editor.
