Anne Hathaway reveals how motherhood helped her understand her character in the idea of you

Anne Hathaway is sharing how her experience as a mother influenced her latest role in the upcoming romantic comedy “The Idea of You.”

The actress, who has two sons with husband Adam Shulman, revealed that playing a mother in the film allowed her to tap into a deeper understanding of love and sacrifice.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the premiere of “The Idea of You” in New York City, Hathaway discussed how her personal experiences as a mother helped her connect with her character Solène. She expressed that the love she feels for her own children enhanced her portrayal of a mother who must make difficult choices for her daughter in the film.

While Hathaway acknowledged that it is not necessary to be a mother to play one on screen, she emphasized the emotional depth that being a parent can bring to a role. In the movie, she plays a divorced mother who finds herself in a whirlwind romance with a young pop star after meeting him at Coachella.

Reflecting on her favorite scenes from the film, Hathaway highlighted a moment where her character shares her love for art with her love interest. She praised the storyline and the chemistry with her co-star Nicholas Galitzine, who plays the young musician Hayes in the film.

At the premiere, Hathaway stunned in a red strapless gown complete with cutouts under the bust line. Paired with silver accessories and a chic ponytail, the actress exuded glamour as she posed for photos with Galitzine.

“The Idea of You” is based on the novel of the same name by Robinne Lee and is set to be released on Amazon Prime Video on May 2, 2024.
