Angela Bassett parents: Meet Betty Jane, Daniel Benjamin Bassett
The daughter of Daniel Benjamin Bassett, a preacher, and Betty Jane Gilbert, a civil servant, Bassett was born in New York City. In honour of her aunt Evelyn, Bassett was given the middle name.
Ten months after Bassett was born, her mother became pregnant with D’nette, who was then born. Her parents sent Bassett to Golden, her father’s sister, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, since, as she claimed, the pregnancy “just made matters worse.” She “liked children and was terrific with them,” even though her aunt didn’t have any of her own.
After her parents’ divorce, Bassett was taken in by her mother at the age of four, and she and her sister moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. Prior to attending her grandmother’s funeral, Bassett hadn’t seen her father in a long time. Bassett initially met Jean, who was several years older than Bassett and the child of her father’s first marriage. After transferring from Jordan Park Elementary School to Disston Middle School for seventh grade, she was bused out of her neighbourhood.
