After getting into a fight with his father after becoming involved in a dispute between his parents, Marvin Gaye was shot twice.
When he arrived at the California Hospital Medical Center, he was already dead. Later, Gaye’s father entered a no contest plea to the charge of willing homicide.
What was Marvin Gaye cause of death?
Since he was a little child, Marvin Gaye and his father, Marvin Gay Sr., had a tense relationship. Christian minister Marvin Sr. was a harsh parent who frequently physically punished his kids. In addition, he was a crossdresser, which made the younger Marvin a target of bullying in the family’s Washington, D.C. neighborhood.
When he rose to fame, he added a “e” to his last name due to this, along with speculations about his own homosexuality (and as a nod to one of Gaye’s favorite singers, Sam Cooke).
Gaye’s father never supported his son’s musical endeavors and over time developed resentment toward the fact that Gaye was closer to his mother, Alberta, and had taken on more of the family’s financial responsibilities.
Even while things between father and son temporarily got better when Gaye’s record What’s Going On became a hit, there was never any real lasting harmony.
