Michael Keaton has been open about the fact that he had long-term plans to return to the part in the 1995 movie Batman Forever.
Was Michael Keaton supposed to be in the Batman?
He played the role in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), and he repeatedly met with director Joel Schumacher to consider playing the role again in the third movie.
However, in a recent interview with Backstage (via Indiewire), Keaton adds a little more detail to statements we published back in 2011 concerning the cause of his departure.
Keaton indicated that it wasn’t going to work out because the two men didn’t comprehend what makes the character so intriguing. Because the darkness is the point in his eyes.
“It was always Bruce Wayne. It was never Batman,” Keaton said. “That was the secret. I never talked about it. [Everyone would say] ‘Batman, Batman, Batman does this,’ and I kept thinking to myself, ‘Y’all are thinking wrong here.’ [It’s all about] Bruce Wayne. What kind of person does that?… Who becomes that?”
