Jake Gyllenhaal is an American actor who has been acting for more than thirty years now. He began acting as a child, making his acting debut in City Slickers (1991).  He is the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner.

Gyllenhaal graduated from the Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles in 1998.  After high school, he enrolled at Columbia University to study Eastern religions and philosophy. At Columbia, he was a resident of John Jay Hall. He dropped out after two years to concentrate on acting but has expressed intentions to eventually finish his degree.
