Melissa Leo was born Melissa Chessington Leo. She was born in New York City, New York, on September 14, 1960. Melissa Leo was an American actress best recognized for her realistic portrayals of strong, flinty women dealing with challenging circumstances. Melissa made her acting debut in 1984, and for All My Children, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy at the 12th Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Newcomer/Woman in a Drama Series.

Melissa made his film debut in 1985 with the unimportant movies Streetwalkin’ and Always. Later, she starred in the melodrama A Time of Destiny in 1988, the horror anthology Deadtime Stories in 1986, and Maggie Greenwald’s feminist western The Ballad of Little Jo in 1989 and 1993.

Melissa appeared in several TV shows as a guest star and was a cast member of The Young Riders’ inaugural season from 1989 to 1992. Leo’s debut came with her depiction of a tough, no-nonsense investigator on the first five seasons of the highly regarded television program Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993 to 1999. She later recreated the role for the television film Homicide: The Movie in 2000.

Melissa was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress for her portrayal of a single mother in Frozen River (2008) who resorts to smuggling illegal immigrants, and she won both the Golden Globe and the Oscar for best-supporting actress for her ruthless portrayal of the controlling mother of an aspiring boxer in The Fighter (2010).
