His father, Enrique Martin Negroni, is a former psychologist who once served as a regional supervisor for a Puerto Rican mental-health organization.
His mother, Doa Nereida Morales, is a former accountant. Martin’s parents were divorced when he was two years old, and although his mother was in charge of him, he had unrestricted access to his father’s home in the middle-class San Juan neighbourhood of University Gardens.
Martin was raised as a Catholic. His closest friends referred to him as “Kiki” . He started singing at the age of six, using wooden spoons from the kitchen as pretend microphones. He frequently sang songs by the English-language rock bands Led Zeppelin, Journey, and REO Speedwagon as well as songs by the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. His maternal grandfather was a poet, and his mother’s side of the family had a musical bent.
