In a September 2016 cup match against Willem II, De Ligt made his senior team debut for Ajax. After 25 minutes, he converted a corner to become the second-youngest goal scorer ever, trailing only Clarence Seedorf.

He started the 2017 UEFA Europa League Final against Manchester United on May 24, making history as the youngest player (17 years, 285 days) to ever play in a major European final. De Ligt won the Golden Boy award on December 17th, 2018, making him the first defender to do so.
