Chandler was born in Buffalo, New York, and raised in Loganville, Georgia, on a farm.
He is the son of dog breeder Sally Jeanette and pharmaceutical sales representative Edward Chandler.

Chandler played high school football coach Eric Taylor in the TV show Friday Night Lights. The show was inspired by the book and movie of the same name by Buzz Bissinger.
Before being repeated on NBC, the initial episodes of the show debuted on the DirecTV satellite channel The 101 Network. In 2011, the series’ last season came to an end.
After Friday Night Lights, Chandler went on to make appearances in Super 8 and Zero Dark Thirty. In the 2013 movie Broken City, starring Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, he played a supporting role.
Chandler starred in The Wolf of Wall Street, which received five Academy Award nominations. In the film, he played FBI agent Patrick Denham.
