Copeland wrestled after making his professional debut in 1992 in singles contests as well as tag team matches, the latter of which he participated in with his lifelong friend Christian Cage.
He competed in many independent promotions. As a developing wrestler, Copeland joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1997. As Edge, he made his televised debut in 1998.
He twice teamed up with Legend to win the MWCW Tag Team Championship, as well as the ICW Street Fight Tag Team Championship, during his independent career.
