Clooney was raised in Kentucky and Ohio. He attended Catholic schools and served as an altar boy. In middle school, Clooney developed Bell’s palsy, a medical condition that partially paralyzes the face. The malady went away within a year.
Clooney attended Augusta High School in Kentucky following the relocation of his parents there.
He claimed to have received just As and a B in school while also participating in basketball and baseball. In 1977, he tried out for the Cincinnati Reds to play professional baseball, but he was not selected after the first round of player cuts and was not given a contract.
George majored in broadcast journalism at Northern Kentucky University from 1979 to 1981 and briefly attended the University of Cincinnati, but he did not complete either program.
