Thuy Trang was born in what was then the city of Saigon but is now known as Ho Chi Minh, in the country of Vietnam. Although the identities of his parents are unknown, it is known that his father served in the Army of South Vietnam.
Trang and her family were forced to live in a detention center in Hong Kong for some time before moving on to California in 1980. Trang attended Banning High School during that time. She had always thought that she would have a successful career in engineering, but a fortunate turn of events prompted her to rethink her mind and seek a career in acting instead.

Thuy Trang began a career in acting, making his debut in a commercial for the Church of Scientology before gaining his first significant part alongside Amy Jo Johnson, Austin St. John, David Yost, and Walter Emanuel Jones in the original cast of the television series Mighty Morphin Rangers (1993-1994).
