Smith studied at Lakewood High. After his second year, he changed to IMG Academy. He had 67 tackles, five interceptions, and four fumble recoveries as a junior.
He made 43 tackles as a senior, along with one pass break-up, one blocked punt, and three blocked field goals. He was named an All-USA High School All-American by USA Today. Rivals.com gave him a four-star rating as a prospect.
Louisiana State University offered Smith a football scholarship, which he accepted. He played as a backup cornerback in 10 games as a true freshman, recording 4 tackles.
For the 2017 season, he enrolled at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. In 12 games as a sophomore, he made 31 tackles, one of which was for a loss, 2 interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, 6 passes defensed (led the team), 26 kickoff returns for 718 yards (averaging 27.6 yards per return), and one touchdown.
