He was a UCLA Bruins college football player. He gained All-American recognition in 2014 as a senior and won the Butkus Award as the best collegiate linebacker in the country. The Vikings selected him with the 45th overall pick in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
From 2010 until 2014, Kendricks was a member of the Bruins. Kendricks, a redshirt freshman in 2011, played in 14 games with three starts after redshirting in 2010.
He finished the year with 76 tackles, placing second on the team, tied for fourth with 4.5 tackles for loss, and second with two sacks. He was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team and the College Football News Freshman All-American team with honours.
