He participated in collegiate football at Alabama, where he won the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship while setting NCAA season records for passer rating and completion % as a junior. Jones, who was chosen by the Patriots in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, guided the team to the playoffs in his rookie year and was named to the Pro Bowl.
