When James McAvoy was seven years old, his parents divorced, and then again when he was eleven.

Because his mother was ill, McAvoy was sent to live with his maternal grandparents, Mary and James Johnstone, in Glasgow’s nearby Drumchapel district.

His mother lived with them on occasion. McAvoy has two siblings: Joy, a younger sister, and Donald, a younger half-brother.
