Dennison was reared in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, where he was born. He has a twin brother named Christian and is the third kid in a family of four. Julian belongs to the Ngti Hau iwi (tribe), which is a part of the Tainui tribal confederation and is of Mori ancestry. He originally tried out at Naenae Primary School, where he received his first role in the movie Shopping (2013).
Later, he received a role in the Australian movie Paper Planes (2015). Later, he went to Upper Hutt’s Hutt International Boys’ School.
