Todd and Beth Burns welcomed their son Sam into the world in Shreveport, Louisiana. He played collegiate golf at Louisiana State University after graduating from high school.
He made 15 collegiate starts during his sophomore season, winning four tournaments. He later won the NCAA Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year award and was selected to the first team of All-Americans for the 2016–17 season.
Later, he would play for the United States on the squad that won the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup. He qualified for the 2017 Barbasol Championship on the PGA Tour as a result.
